Gary Kubiak meeting with Vikings today

For what? Nobody seems to know.

As the Minnesota Vikings work to continue filling out their coaching staff for the 2019 season, a very interesting name has come up, and he’s actually being interviewed by the Vikings today.

Numerous reports are coming out that Gary Kubiak is in Minnesota today to talk about a position on the Vikings’ coaching staff. Kubiak was most recently the head coach of the Denver Broncos, where he led the Broncos to a victory in Super Bowl L. He was also the head coach of the Houston Texans for eight seasons and the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens in 2014.

Kubiak left the sidelines following the 2016 season, citing health reasons, but stayed with the Broncos as a consultant. He was rumored to be coming back to the Denver sideline as the team’s offensive coordinator under new head coach Vic Fangio, but those plans fell through. Now he’s going around interviewing for jobs with other teams, and has an interview scheduled with the Jacksonville Jaguars when he’s done in Minnesota.

What position is Kubiak interviewing for in Minnesota? Well, presumably, it isn’t the offensive coordinator job, as the team just brought back Kevin Stefanski following his flirtation with the Cleveland Browns. The team does have an opening for a quarterback coach with Stefanski taking over as the full-time OC, and Kubiak would be a pretty outstanding get at that spot. However, he’s likely going to have offensive coordinator openings to interview for, and it remains to be seen whether or not he’d turn down a job like that to coach quarterbacks for Mike Zimmer.

It’s news we certainly weren’t expecting to hear today, but it’s intriguing news in any case.
